How to Prep for Your Wax Appointment (and What NOT to Do)

Smooth skin starts before the wax. If you’ve ever left a waxing appointment wondering why the results didn’t last—or why it was more uncomfortable than expected—it might come down to your prep. At Rebel Wax Studio, we’re all about setting you up for success, so here’s a simple guide on how to prep for your wax appointment (plus a few things to avoid).

1. Let It Grow (Yes, Really)

Your hair should be at least ¼ inch long—about the length of a grain of rice. That usually means 2–3 weeks of no shaving before your appointment. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t grip properly, which means more discomfort and less effective removal.

Pro Tip: If you’re ever unsure, it’s better to come in with longer hair. We can always trim if needed!

2. Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before

Gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin, lifts any trapped hairs, and can make waxing more effective and less painful.

Use a scrub glove, manual scrub, or chemical exfoliant—but don’t overdo it. You want fresh skin, not irritated skin.

Do NOT exfoliate the day of your appointment. It can make your skin more sensitive to the wax.

3. Skip the Caffeine & Alcohol

We know, this one’s tough—but it makes a big difference!

Both caffeine and alcohol stimulate the nervous system, which means your skin will be more sensitive to pain. Try to avoid both the day of your wax.

If you can’t skip your daily caffeine try booking an early appointment and stop by Dutch Bros after (there’s one right across from the studio)

4. Avoid Lotions, Oils, and Self-Tanner

On the day of your appointment, come in with clean, dry skin.

Skip the lotion, body oil, or self-tanner—these create a barrier that prevents the wax from gripping properly.

If you’re unsure, just shower like normal and avoid applying anything after.

5. Wear Loose, Comfy Clothing

You’ll thank us later!

After your wax, your skin may be a little sensitive or pink—tight jeans or leggings can trap sweat and friction, which can lead to irritation or ingrowns. Loose cotton clothing is best.

6. Don’t Worry If You’re Nervous

Whether it’s your first wax or your fiftieth, it’s totally normal to feel a little anxious. That’s why we do everything we can to create a relaxing, judgment-free space with the best products and techniques for sensitive skin.

Bonus: What NOT to Do

Let’s recap a few common things to avoid:

    •    Don’t shave beforehand

    •    Don’t come in fresh from a workout or sauna

    •    Don’t use numbing creams (they often make things worse!)

    •    Don’t schedule a wax right before your period if you’re extra sensitive
